From Athlete to Accountant

I was born and raised in the Great Lone Star State in a small town located 45 minutes from San Antonio. The one thing I can say about my town is that it is “simply Devine” (Devine, TX, that is). I grew up playing sports for the majority of my life. But if I wasn’t on the playing field, you could find me hunting, fishing, working on random projects, or helping out my granddad. Faith, family and sports are what have shaped me into the person I am today.

If you were to ask me why I chose accounting for my undergraduate degree, the answers that I would have for you are 1) it was at the top of the degree listings and 2) I wasn’t that bad at math. Even though my decision-making process at the time may not have been up to par, I never once thought of changing my major. I was fortunate enough to attend the University of the Incarnate Word here in San Antonio, TX where the professors had the biggest impact on me. I liked the one-on-one relationships that I was able to build throughout my college career. Another plus to attending UIW was that I was able to continue my athletic career on the track & field team. I was a member of the throwers’ squad. The events I competed in were shot put, discus, the weight throw (it weighed 35lbs!) and the hammer throw (my personal favorite!). Winning a few meets and traveling with the team was always fun, but one of the coolest things ever was competing against Olympians from all over the world! Realistically, I never had a chance to beat them unless they scratched, but when they did, I told everyone that I beat an Olympian!  Not many folks can say that, now, can they?

I recently accepted a full time position here at ATKG and not only do I love working here, but it also provided me with another answer to why I choose accounting: it’s because of a firm like this! ATKG has been supportive of a work/life balance, especially since I just started graduate school at Texas A&M San Antonio. The leadership team and co-workers at the firm preach this balance. I enjoy the people I work with (and the parties that we throw)! I am excited for my future here at ATKG.
